The late climber found dead near Lone Eagle Peak last week has been identified as Peter Kubiniec, 23, of Boulder.

The Grand County coroner’s office said Kubiniec died of multiple blunt force injuries from a fall while rock climbing. The cause of death was ruled an accident.

According to a press release, Grand County dispatch received a report of a late-arriving climber around 8:30 a.m. on July 23 in the Lone Eagle Peak area near Crater Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, located in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. That same morning, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a late-arriving party at Brainard Lake. Crews from both counties began searching.

According to the press release, one of the reporting parties said Kubiniec planned to hike from Brainard to Pawnee Pass, to Crater Lake, up Lone Eagle Peak, over Apache Peak and back to Brainard, a route that took place mostly in Grand County.

Kubiniec was found by hikers at 12:15 p.m. on July 24 near Lone Eagle Peak, about eight miles into the Indian Peaks Wilderness. His body was recovered later that day and taken to the coroner’s office.
