According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the most common job in the US is a love triangle.

Home health care workers, personal care workers, retail workers and fast food workers topped the list, with 3.6 million workers in each of these occupations.

As for the least common job, The Washington Post reported that the federal government employed 260 wood pattern makers in the U.S.

The demand for home health and personal care aides is increasing as the share of the elderly U.S. population grows exponentially. The profession is the fastest growing among most states, news site Stacker reported.

Here’s what you need to know about the most common occupations in the US:

What are the most common jobs?

Home health aides typically help people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Personal caregivers are often hired to care for people in hospice care, according to BLS.

Most home health aides do not require a degree. Those employed by home health or hospice agencies may need to complete formal training or take a standardized test.

According to the BLS, retail salespeople and fast food restaurant workers are not required to have any formal training.

Jobs vary by state

The most common occupations in 14 states were fast food workers and cashiers.

In states like Massachusetts, where the population is aging faster than other states, home health aide was the most common job. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that more than a quarter of Massachusetts’ population will be 60 or older by 2030.

Washington, DC is the only region where the highest title is “business operations specialist.”

Ten years ago, home care and personal care workers were not in the top 10 most common jobs.

Instead, the most common job in 2013 was retail salesperson, with 4.5 million workers. The average annual income for retail salespeople was $25,370.

According to the BLS, the number of retail salespeople declined between 2013 and 2023, but average wages in the industry increased by 45%.
