SOCORRO, N.M. — The New Mexico Department of Transportation has announced a project to replace two bridges that carry traffic on I-25 over Nogal Canyon near Socorro.

NMDOT is receiving $71.25 million in grant funding through the federal Bridge Investment Program for the project. The project will replace the two existing bridges across the gorge.

According to NMDOT, the superstructure of the existing bridges has deteriorated to the point that they are nearing the end of their useful life.

The project gives them the opportunity to modernise the bridge design and flatten the slope of the gorge, making it more suitable for current speeds.

There is no information available yet about when this project will start.

The total project will cost $142,526,324. To cover the remainder, NMDOT is providing a $34,750,724 grant and using $36,525,600 in additional federal funding.

New Mexico is one of 13 states receiving funding from the federal Bridge Investment Program
